CHAPTER 47

25 September 2016

Northern Cyprus

Jamie had slept badly. He had regretted putting the phone down on Martha, but what else could he have done? He was totally impotent and beholden to people he did not know or trust. For now he had to go with what his rescuers said.

He was in good time for check in. To be out in the open rather than running and hiding was a strange experience. He felt as though he was being watched and could not dispel the nagging fear that he could be arrested at any moment.

Jamie was part of the throng of travellers in the airport but not one of them. He was different. His life was no longer normal.

Despite his concerns, check in and passport control went smoothly. He spotted Avraham in the departure lounge. He made no attempt to come over or make contact.

Jamie also noticed the woman from the hotel reception as he queued at the boarding gate. For a fleeting moment he thought he saw Osher on the stopover at Frankfurt airport but otherwise he recognised no one on what turned out to be an uneventful flight to Larnaca.

As instructed, he took an airport taxi to Nicosia and walked down Ledra Street. He saw no signs of a frontier crossing, just a busy market and then, when he thought he must have taken a wrong turning, Jamie came across a small queue of people by a building signposted “Passport Kontrol”.

He waited in line until it was his turn. His mouth was dry as he handed over the passport to the official sitting behind a glass screen.

“What is the purpose of your visit?”

Jamie hesitated for a moment. “Tourism. I’ve come to see the sights.”

“You’re Irish?” The man was inspecting his passport carefully.

“Yes.”

“You don’t sound Irish, Mr Walker. I have been there, you see.”

Jamie could feel the sweat trickling down his back. “I was born in Cork but was brought up in England.”

With a nod the official handed back his passport and stamped the visa. He was through.

Jamie overheard an American couple talking about the Kyrenia Gate and followed them at a discreet distance. It felt so strange to be alone and exposed. At last he came to the mellow stone structure. It straddled two modern roads and was now devoid of any ramparts that would once have connected it to the old city walls.

He watched the American take a picture of his wife under the arched doorway and sighed. They were a part of society, enjoying themselves in the afternoon sunshine. He was divorced from their normal world and feeling anxious. They would return to their hotel or cruise ship. Jamie had no idea where he was going or what would happen to him.

“Welcome to Northern Cyprus.”

Jamie turned in surprise. Avraham was standing close behind him.

“Let’s go.”

Without a further word Avraham began to walk across the road. Jamie followed, feeling a mixture of relief and annoyance. These men controlled him. Yes, they provided safety but they controlled him, nonetheless.

He was about to ask him where they were going when a small car pulled up.
